There’s a quote attributed to Ed Sheeran I’ve seen on Tumblr and Twitter and Facebook that really sticks it in (raw, no lube) by basically stating that not everybody is going to like you or your ideas: ”I can’t tell you the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.”

Since this quote has been circling the internets, I thought I’d share the original (although much less succinct) version: ”I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.” – Henry David Thoreau

Most people want others to like them. We want to be liked, to feel special. That’s why were all LOOK AT ME on every social media site there is. We need validation because we’re attention-seeking whores.

Except that by trying to please others, we may not be pleasing ourselves. It’s kind of like sex, sometimes the world is too lazy and full of itself to reciprocate. If we’re only do things that make others happy, who’s giving us the reach-around? Keep one hand free. Satisfy your own needs.
